House Rules

valid for Merseburg Cathedral with Cloister, Michaelis Chapel, exhibition in the south cloister, Chapter House, Chapter House Garden, KinderDomusMerseburch

Dear visitors,

We welcome you warmly in the Merseburg Imperial Cathedral and wish you a pleasant stay. The house rules are binding for visitors. By entering the cathedral ensemble you accept the house rules.

1) Purpose of the house rules

These house rules are intended to make your visit to the Merseburg Cathedral a pleasant experience. It is therefore in your own interest to observe the house rules. We take criticism from your side seriously and are therefore pleased to receive ideas and suggestions for improvement.

2) Right to impose the house rules

The administration of the Vereinigte Domstifter, represented by the director, exercises the householder's rights. On instruction of the director, the exercise of the householder's rights is transferred to the employees of the visitor centre as well as to the employees of the event management and marketing of Merseburg Cathedral. The instructions of the staff must therefore be followed. They serve the safety of the visitors as well as the protection of the cultural assets kept by the Vereinigte Domstifter.

3) Validity of admission tickets and access authorisation

During the tourist opening hours, entry to the cathedral and the associated rooms in the cathedral ensemble is only permitted with a valid ticket.

When entering the cathedral ensemble, the tickets must be presented for validation and then carried along for the entire duration of the visit. The tickets entitle the holder to one entry, invalidated tickets lose their validity when leaving the cathedral ensemble.

The purchase of concessionary tickets usually requires proof of eligibility by presenting an official document (e.g. students, apprentices, recipients of level II unemployment benefit, holders of a severe disability card).

Tickets which have been acquired or used illegally lose their validity and are to be returned without replacement. The affected persons can be prohibited from further visits. The Vereinigte Domstifter reserve filing charges.

Annual passes are personal, they are not transferable. They entitle the holder to visit the Cathedral, including the Chapter House, the exhibition in the south cloister and the Cathedral Garden as often as desired during the valid opening hours for a period of one year from the date of purchase (special exhibitions are subject to special conditions).

The annual pass must be presented at each visit, if necessary proof of entitlement must be provided by means of an identity card or other official document.

Holders of an annual pass receive a 10 % discount on:

  • single admission tickets for two further persons when visiting Merseburg Cathedral
  • a single admission ticket for Naumburg Cathedral including the Cathedral Treasure
  • guided tours incl. special tours of Naumburg and Merseburg Cathedral and the Zeitz Chapter Library
  • project costs of the Naumburg KinderDomBauhütte and the KinderDomusMerseburch

Essential restoration work in the Cathedral can affect the view of individual works of art.

Services take place on Sundays and religious festivals from 10 a.m.–12 noon.

5) Rules of conduct and liability

Visitors are asked to behave in a manner appropriate to the character of the Cathedral and to refrain from anything that is contrary to morality and the maintenance of safety and order.

The cathedral is a place of worship and is also a place of personal prayer and reflection during the tourist opening hours. All visitors are therefore required to behave in a manner appropriate to the dignity of the church. Loud speech and running around are therefore to be avoided. Visitors should wear clothing appropriate to the dignity of the Cathedral.

All restricted areas of the church - especially the altar room and the organ gallery - are not accessible for a visit. Exceptions apply only to authorised persons and authorised guided tours.

Smoking is not permitted in the Cathedral ensemble. Exceptions can be permitted for events. Separate areas for smoking will be signposted.

Animals may not be taken into the Cathedral and the adjoining premises, with the exception of guide and assistance dogs.

Eating and drinking is not permitted in the Cathedral and in the exhibition areas of the south cloister or in the Chapter House.

Mobile phones are to be set to "silent"; the use of mobile phones outside the Cathedral, the Chapter House and the exhibition areas is to be carried out in such a way that other visitors are not disturbed.

The bringing of bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller skates, balance bikes, etc. into the Cathedral and into the adjacent premises of the Cathedral area is not permitted for safety reasons and to protect our visitors from unreasonable disturbances. These objects must remain outside the Cathedral.

Persons in a clearly alcoholized or intoxicated state are not allowed to enter the premises or may be expelled from the premises during the visit by the staff of the visitor centre.

Children under six years of age may only visit the Cathedral and the adjoining premises when accompanied by an adult.

School classes and after-school groups as well as other children and youth groups may only visit the Cathedral ensemble when accompanied by teachers and supervisors. For insurance reasons, they must be present during the entire time of the Cathedral visit and supervise the group sufficiently.

It is not permitted to touch the exhibits or to handle objects that could cause damage to the works of art.

For the protection of visitors and works of art, individual areas of the Cathedral ensemble are video-monitored. These areas are signposted.

Visitors are liable for all damages caused by their behaviour. The obligation to reimburse costs also applies in the event of negligent or intentional activation of the alarm and fire alarm systems. Parents or guardians or supervising adults are liable for damage caused by unattended children.

Passages, stairs and emergency exits must not be obstructed. Emergency exits may only be used in an emergency.

Guided tours through the Cathedral and the adjacent rooms may only be conducted by the staff of Vereinigte Domstifter. Guides not employed by Vereinigte Domstifter may only conduct a guided tour with an explicit authorization by Vereinigte Domstifter.

Wheelchairs may be used in the Cathedral and in the entire cathedral ensemble. Wheelchair users are recommended to bring an accompanying person with them.

6) Photography and filming

Filming and photographing is permitted for private purposes only. For this purpose, a photo permit must be purchased and carried along in the cathedral ensemble in a way that is clearly visible to the supervisory staff. The use of flash and tripod is permitted.

When filming and photographing, the personal rights of other visitors must be respected.

Photography and filming for commercial and scientific purposes as well as in the context of media coverage (press) is only allowed with the written permission of Vereinigte Domstifter.

7) Wardrobe and lost property

Bulky hand luggage (rucksacks and bags larger than DIN A 3) as well as wet umbrellas may not be taken into the Cathedral and the adjoining rooms (especially exhibition rooms). Lockers or umbrella stands are available for the storage of these items.

Items not collected are treated as lost property. A liability on the part of Vereinigte Domstifter for valuables deposited in the cloakroom area is excluded.

Please hand in items found in the cathedral ensemble at the cathedral cash desk. Objects found will be disposed of according to the legal regulations. A handling fee will be charged for reforwarding lost items, the amount of which depends on the time and effort involved and the shipping costs.

8) Final clause

The house rules come into force with immediate effect. They are available in the cash area. They can also be viewed on the website www.merseburger-dom.de.
