Merseburg Cathedral – once the favourite place of the only canonised imperial couple, Henry II and Cunigunde – with the Michaeliskapelle (St. Michael’s Chapel) in the cloister, the Marienkapelle (Lady Chapel) in the chapter house and its idyllic terraced garden, offers an indescribable ambience for you to take this significant step as part of a church or civil wedding ceremony.
A small champagne reception after the ceremony, special memories captured in a photo and a guided tour for the entire wedding party will make this special day an unforgettable experience.
Church wedding
Church weddings are held either in the Cathedral of St. John and St. Lawrence or in the St. Michael’s Chapel in the cloister.

Civil wedding
In cooperation with the local registry office Merseburg, you have the exclusive opportunity to get married in the Lady Chapel of the chapter house or in the adjacent terraced garden (chapter house garden).

*In case of unfavourable weather conditions, the wedding will take place in the Lady Chapel in the chapter house or in the wedding room of the Ständehaus.

In the run-up to the wedding, the staff of Vereinigte Domstifter’s visitor service will be glad to welcome the bridal couple for an on-site appointment.
During this visit, you will get to know the wedding venue and you can find out about possible additional services (champagne reception, souvenir photos, guided tour of the cathedral for the wedding party).

Additional services
Champagne reception
In the shade of the quince trees, surrounded by the scent of roses and lavender, you and your wedding guests can toast with a glass of champagne on the terraces of the chapter house garden after your wedding ceremony.
For a small champagne reception, it is possible to rent up to five bar tables and one or two side tables (beer table set) including covers or tablecloths from the Vereinigte Domstifter.
We are also happy to assist you in finding a caterer.

Souvenir photos
It is of course possible for you to have this unique moment captured for eternity. Photography and filming for private use are permitted during the ceremony and champagne reception.
If you, as the bridal couple, would like to use the cloister as a backdrop for your photographs, or if you would like to photograph the wedding party during a possible guided tour of the cathedral, including the works of art, you will need a photo permit for this.

Merseburg Cathedral is considered one of the most important cathedral buildings in Germany and is a famous cultural site on the Romanesque Road in Saxony-Anhalt.
Henry II and Cunigunde, the only canonised imperial couple of the German Empire, founded the Bishopric of Merseburg in their favourite place and had the magnificent cathedral built.
Whether it be the unique “Merseburg Incantations” – two Old High German spells from Germanic pagan times – the bronze tomb slab of the anti-king Rudolf of Rheinfelden from the 11th century or the hall crypt built around 1040, you will experience unique and valuable art treasures. Merseburg Cathedral sees the merging of history, architecture and music. With its Romantic Ladegast organ, the Cathedral also has a musical treasure to offer. A private organ prelude could become a special musical experience for your wedding party.
